Outdoor, sun-lit, wind-heavy.

Garden ceremonies are the friendliest lighting environment on this list — but wind will destroy your audio if you don't plan for it. Use a wireless lav with a windshield (DJI Mic 2 + furry) and shoot fast primes wide open in shade.

Conditions

What the venue actually gives you.

Lighting
Daylight, often mixed harsh sun and open shade. Watch the couple's face when they turn — half in sun and half in shade is unrecoverable. ND filter mandatory.
Movement
Wide open. You can walk the perimeter and shoot from any angle.
Audio
Wind is the enemy. Furry deadcat on every lav; consider a boom operator with a shotgun if the ceremony is on a windy hillside.
Timing
20–40 minutes. Shorter than indoor because guests are standing.

Pitfalls

What will go wrong.

Wind ruining audio

Foam windshield alone is not enough outdoors. Deadcat furry windshield is mandatory.

Mixed sun/shade on faces

Position the officiant so the couple face open shade, not the sun. Ask the coordinator.

Do I need an ND filter for garden weddings?

Yes. To keep a fast prime wide open in daylight, you need at least an ND8 (3 stops). A variable ND like the PolarPro Peter McKinnon VND is the flexible choice.
