The beach playbook.

Wind, sand, salt — three enemies.

Beach weddings punish gear. Wind destroys audio, sand destroys mounts, and salt spray destroys anything not weather-sealed. Bring only weather-sealed bodies (Canon R6 II, Sony α7C II with weather kit, Panasonic S5 IIX) and treat every lav mic as consumable.

What the venue actually gives you.

Lighting
Extreme dynamic range — bright sand, dark tuxedo, glaring sea. Highlights blow before shadows recover. Expose for the couple's face, let the sea highlight-clip.
Movement
You can walk anywhere, but shoes come off. Plan camera bags on a folding stool, not on the sand.
Audio
The worst audio environment on this list. Waves, wind, and no roof. Double-windshield everything.
Timing
Short — 15–25 minute ceremonies. Guests won't stand in sun for longer.

  • 35mm f/1.4 (weather-sealed body + lens)
  • DJI Mic 2 + furry (carry backup TXs)
  • Rode NTG5 shotgun on a boom (optional but effective)
  • Lens rain sleeve — even on clear days for spray

Pitfalls

What will go wrong.

Sand in mounts and mics

Never set gear on sand. Use a folding table or plastic drop cloth.

Wind + waves make lavs unusable

Have a wired backup — either a shotgun on a boom or a wired lav to a Zoom F3 in the officiant's pocket.

Highlight clipping

The ocean will always be brighter than the tuxedo. Expose for faces; let the sea clip.

How do I record audio at a beach wedding?

Double windshield everything (foam + fur), position the lav under a lapel or shirt collar to break the wind, and record a wired backup on a Zoom F3 in a pocket if possible. Assume 50% of your primary audio is unusable and plan the redundancy accordingly.
