The ballroom playbook.

Hotel receptions, mixed lighting, DJ-driven.

Ballroom receptions are the workhorse of the industry — hotel + DJ + uplights + occasional pyro. Shoot on a full-frame body with IBIS, a 35mm f/1.4 for the dance floor, and treat the DJ's uplights as your key light. Your camera's dual native ISO earns its price on the dancefloor.

Conditions

What the venue actually gives you.

Lighting
DJ-controlled color LEDs (magenta, blue, amber cycling). Uplights every 8 feet. Tungsten sconces on the room perimeter. Auto WB will destroy you — lock at 3,200K or 3,600K.
Movement
Wide. Walk the dance floor freely.
Audio
The DJ's PA is your enemy for lav mic bleed. Get a mixer board feed for toasts if the DJ allows it.
Timing
4–6 hour reception. Toasts, first dance, parent dance, cake cut, garter, exit.

The DJ's cycling LEDs will make auto WB shift every second. Lock manual.

Fog turns 4K into mush. Focus-lock manually if AF hunts.

How do I shoot a ballroom dancefloor without a flash?

The DJ's uplights are your key light. Shoot at f/1.4–f/2, ISO 6400–12,800, and 1/60 shutter. Aim to have an uplight or bistro string behind the couple as your fill.
